To be an artist you have to have less of a stake in a stable, single identity; it’s how you function as an artist, that sense of being both inside and outside means part of you is outside.  You’re less invested in the consistent self.   In fact, the consistent single self is inimical to your creative process.  And yet, the fact of inconsistency is experienced by many of us as we live in the world as a source of shame.  “I can’t sustain, I go from one thing to another.”              …David Milch
